HOME_Script (Original - male character)

1. INT. LIVING ROOM, HOME, SF - LATE NIGHT

The narration comes with the MELANCHOLIC MUSIC in black.

‘I’ (V.O)

          I’m homeless.

I’ve lost my home for several years.

But, I still dream about it,

even though it fades away day by day.

In the empty living room, the warm, orange lamp

lights in the dark. The dim light waves in a stop motion

movement and it stops slowly. THE WHISTLE OF A TRAIN

comes as the light gets dimmer.

‘I’ (V.O)

I sometimes wake up and go down to the bottom

          floor.

I see the lamp light always turning on.

I don’t know why, but I like it.

The dim light in the dark,

          Somehow lonesome, but feels comforting.

(PAUSE)

Maybe… my color of loneliness is orange.

The dim light fades out, the title HOME shows in black.

2. EXT. SUNG-SU BRIDGE, SEOUL - DAY EARLY MORNING / WINTER

THE NOISE OF PASSING CARS AND WIND comes from the bridge.

The gray sky filled with smoke makes a dreary atmosphere.

Cars pass on the freeway under the bridge with TRAFFIC

NOISE. The city’s canopy of buildings is shown beyond a

gray bar on the bridge. The subway train passes over the

bridge. At the same time, the filmmaker ‘I’ (30) wearing

a heavy coat with a shabby camera stands alone in the

middle of the bridge with an expressionless face.

‘I’ (V.O)

          Welcome home, you say.

But, this isn’t home anymore, it hasn’t been for

          years.

          I’m still a stranger.

3. EXT. RIVERSIDE PATH, SEOUL - DAY EARLY MORNING / WINTER

The ‘I’ walks on the grey edge of the sidewalk alone

like a little boy walking on a balance beam.

The ‘I’s feet stop at the broken edge of the sidewalk.

The concrete pavers on the sidewalk are shown in his

point of view. Some are loose and some are dense.

The ‘I’ takes a step forward carefully to avoid stepping

the boundary lines on the pavers. SOUND OF SUBWAY TRAIN

comes. The ‘I’ hesitates when he gets to the dense lined

   pavers.

‘I’ (V.O)

On the way home, the road seems so long.

I walk this road by following the train whistle.

          One step then another...

Can I get there if I cross the fence of this

          memory?

As the ‘I’s feet move from the dense lined papers, a

man’s shadow with 8mm film camera comes to the dense

lined pavers. After little pause, the shadow moves from

the pavers like the ‘I’ did.

4. EXT. ENTRANCE OF THE GANGNAM DISTRICT, SEOUL – DAY

   MORNING / WINTER

At the corner of the riverside path, the entrance of the

tunnel to the city is shown. The ‘I’ walks to the tunnel,

but he stops at the warning sign of construction

on the steel bars. At the corner of the construction

spot, several pieces of broken glass are shown. The ‘I’

looks at one of the pieces. The sunlight is reflected on

   the glass.

‘I’ (V.O)

A piece of the wind, the real wind.

A piece of the air, the real air.

A piece of the smell, the real smell.

          The fragments of the memory.

The ‘I’ walks into the tunnel. As the ‘I’s figure is

disappeared in the dark, the AMBIENT NOISE OF THE STREET

   COMES and gets louder.

5. EXT. MAIN STREET, GANGNAM, SEOUL – DAY MORNING / WINTER

The ‘I’ standing in a mass of people on a crosswalk is

shown. The people pass on a crosswalk as a red traffic

light turns green. The ‘I’ doesn’t move and stays in the

edge line of a crosswalk. Different colors and styles

of the legs passing through the ‘I’s feet on the

crosswalk are shown with FEET TAPPING NOISE.

The green traffic light turns to orange

and it starts flickering. The orange traffic light

turns to red. People come to the crosswalk and wait

the green light again. The ‘I’ is disappeared as the

   people pass by him.

‘I’ (V.O)

          Where am I?

          Who are these people?

Where are they running off so busy?

I stop and say hi to them,

But, no one stops, no one looks at me.

They only go their own ways.

6. EXT. SUBWAY STATION, SEOUL - DAY MORNING / WINTER

The mass of people walks on the passage. TRAIN BOARDING

ANNOUNCEMENT comes; they run into the packed train.

The empty platform shows. In the middle of the platform,

a small white screen flickers. The white screen turns

black and the animated subway route map with a small

moving train is shown on the screen. Closed-up image of

the train moves slowly with the AMBIENT NOISE

from the inside of the train.

‘I’ (V.O)

          Without my consent,

the train named 'time' passes me and leaves.

I’m left alone on the empty platform.

The flickering screen over there only confirms my

          existence.

7. INT. SUBWAY TRAIN, SEOUL – DAY NOON / WINTER

In the subway train, few people sit on chairs. As a

train arrives at the station, the image of the ‘I’

is briefly reflected. Over the reflected image of

the ‘I’ inside of the train, the blur image of the

SHADOW crouching in the corner from the outside of the

train overlaps slowly in stop motion.

‘I’ (V.O)

What am I waiting for, for such a long time?

The sound of the air is even cold in this place.

I see the man crouching far from the edge of

          Platform.

Has it been far too long?

We feel so awkward to each other...

8. INT. SUBWAY PLATFORM, SEOUL – DAY NOON / WINTER

A subway door opens and no one gets out. The door closes.

On the empty platform, the shadow on the shabby wall

on the side of the subway tunnel starts talking to

   the ‘I’ in KOREAN.

SHADOW (V.O)

          Hello, can you see me?

Can you hear my voice…? I passed through the long

tunnel of time and stopped here.

I’ve been waiting you for a long time.

          I missed you.

It's all right, stop walking and talk to me.

The empty platform shows again. The ‘I’ walks to the

wall and leans on it tiredly. The dark, a long way

of subway tunnel is shown behind the platform.

‘I’ (V.O)

          I missed you, too...

But, the road behind of me was a long way to come.

I wanted to find a home I've never been before.

          But, I failed.

I walked carefully along the line with a heavy

          bag saddled at my side.

I stumbled and fell at times.

I felt afraid, so I stopped.

   The shadow appears and speaks.

SHADOW (V.O)

Tell me about the place you’ve traveled.

The orange-ish headlight of the running train comes from

the tunnel with the ECHOING NOISE. The ‘I’s reflection

is scattered on the windows of the passing train in

stop motion movement. As the image gets more blurred

with the mixture of both KOREAN and ENGLISH SPEAKING

NOISE, the passing train overlaps to the BART train

passing on the Powell Station in the city of San

   Francisco.

9. INT. SUBWAY TRAIN, SF – DAY / SUMMER

As the train gets out from the ground, the landscape of

San Francisco is shown through the subway train window.

As the train runs fast, the lines of houses on

a hill are shown. The road is dispread long and

far in the front. The image is reflected by the bright

   sunlight through the window.

‘I’ (V.O)

Well… It was shiny and glittered at first.

My heart was fluttering all day.

People were kind and they told me about the

dream, dreams I would never met…

SHADOW (V.O)

          What dream?

‘I’ (V.O)

          The dream about a home,

the real home that people were always missing.

          The place I went,

there was a long road I’ve never seen.

I thought that’s the way to go home.

So, I took the subway to get there faster.

   The shadow appears without words.

SHADOW (V.O)

          ……

The people in the BART train are shown with the SUBWAY

ROUTE ANNOUNCEMENT. The ‘I’ looks at the people vacantly.

Some talk on the phone, some send texts, some sit and

work with the laptop, and some put earphones and

listen music. As the train goes underground,

the ‘I’ plugs in his earphones, the AMBIENT NOISE turns

to MUTE. In the MUTE, all of the people look tired and

isolated. Their expressionless faces shake on the window

   reflection.

‘I’ (V.O)

In the subway, there were many passengers.

          They seemed tired and lonesome.

I tried to talk to them to ask where the train

goes, but no one wanted to talk.

There was a destination announcement in the train,

          but, I couldn’t understand.

  SHADOW (V.O)

          So… did you get there?

10. INT. BUS, SF – DAY / SUMMER

The beautiful city landscape of San Francisco is shown

through the MUNI bus window. Different images of

various people on the street and the antique and

modernized buildings are shown. The traffic light on

the crosswalk turns to red and the bus stops.

The bus driver looks back to the passengers.

The rear door opens and the ‘I’ gets off next to

    the fare box.

‘I’ (V.O)

No, I got off from the train and took the bus.

I saw the world I’ve never seen.

          It was exotic and beautiful.

It seemed like the way go home.

So, I asked to the driver where the bus goes.

SHADOW (V.O)

          Where the bus was going?

(PAUSE)

‘I’ (V.O)

Well… I don’t know… He asked me to show my

ticket, but I didn’t have one.

He told me I should get off from the bus.

SHADOW (V.O)

          What happen then?

11. EXT. AMTRAK STATION, EMERYVILLE – DAY / SUMMER

The AMTRAK station by a long railroad is shown.

Inside of the station, people buy tickets from the

vending machine. The ‘I’ stands alone in front of the

vending machine. Different costs of the fares are shown

on the screen. The ‘I’ puts his hand in his pocket to

count the money. While he hesitates, the people walk in

hurry as the TRAIN ANNOUNCEMENT comes.

A train arrives and people get in.

The empty platform shows after the train leaves.

The ‘I’ sitting on the bench alone is shown.

The sky gets dark and the DRIZZLING SOUND COMES.

‘I’ (V.O)

The driver dropped me at the train station.

He told me that was the road to go home.

But, I didn’t have money to buy a ticket.

So, I started to walk… and I came here.

(GULP)

          I’m so thirsty… I might have walked too long…

The shadow shows again and talks.

SHADOW (V.O)

          음…

          Hm…

(PAUSE)

You may feel thirsty… until you get your

          destination.

Thirsty between the irretrievable road you have

Walked and the invisible road you will walk…

The ‘I’ leaning on the wall of the subway platform

shows again. He flops down into the ground and talks.

‘I’ (V.O)

Tell me your story… Where were you and where

          are you going?

The shadow on the wall is slowly erased by the

headlights of the train with THE MIXED SOUND OF THE

ONCOMING TRAIN AND CHILDREN PLAYING. The light

gets brighter and it overlaps to the orange-ish

sunlight over the playground. THE NOISE OF

CHILDREN RUNNING and WIND BLOWING comes as a Transition

    sequence.

12. EXT. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, SEOUL - DAY LATE AFTERNOON /

         WINTER

Dust and sand wave on a large school ground in the

winter. Trees are bare of leaves and few little

children play with sand after school. The sky is blue,

without clouds and THE NOISE OF THE WIND rings their

ears. A boy calls friends and they run together. A dust

cloud follows foots of the running children.

A twig waves slowly and a leaf hanging on the twig

falls down slightly. Wind pushes out the leaf with dust.

The little boy hunkered down with an expressionless

face sees the flying leaf on the empty ground.

SHADOW (V.O)

I’ve been several places in your memory.

          I was waiting for you.

‘I’ (V.O)

I don’t understand… what did you do on there?

SHADOW (V.O)

I played all day until the sun goes down.

They left one by one and I was left alone.

I saw you. I called you at the top of my voice.

          But, you couldn’t hear me.

‘I’ (V.O)

          I don’t remember…

          No… I heard your voice, but…

13. EXT. HIGH SCHOOL, SEOUL - DAY LATE AFTERNOON / WINTER

THE SCHOOL BELL RINGS AND ECHOES. At the main entrance

of the high school, a bunch of students wearing a

school uniform come out. Among the students, a male

student looks at the camera straight very shortly.

The empty school ground is shown up after a mass of

    students leaving.

SHADOW (V.O)

The wind blew and I opened my eyes.

Strange, yet somehow familiar whispers tickled my

ear and I took a step towards the sound.

I saw you. I followed and faced you.

          But, you didn’t recognize me.

‘I’ (V.O)

          I… I saw you…

          but… I was afraid…

SHADOW (V.O)

          It’s ok…

You don’t have to explain everything.

14. EXT. APARTMENT COMPLEXT ROOF, SEOUL – DAY DUSK / WINTER

A bunch of apartment complexes is shown from the

rooftop of the apartment. On the large space of the

rooftop, different shapes of antennas and ventilators

are shown. The sky gets dark and numerous windows

of the apartment lights up. It looks like a cube or a

    chicken coop.

SHADOW (V.O)

Do you think it’s because of our height

          difference?

We are looking at different places.

‘I’ (V.O)

I always wanted to come here…

(PAUSE)

If I untie and untie these rings of the memory,

can we arrive home in our memory?

The animated images of the lights from the windows of

the apartments comes with THE TRAFFIC NOISE from the

bridge that the ‘I’ walked in the beginning as a

    Transition sequence.

15. EXT. EXT. SUNG-SU BRIDGE, SEOUL - DAY LATE AFTERNOON /

         WINTER

The ‘I’ is shown in the middle of the bridge and looks

at the water. The image of the water waves and the

image of the ‘I’ walking on the handrail is shown.

The ‘I’ stops and drops the camera. The camera dropping

into the water with a slash is shown in a slow motion

    with MELANCHOLIC MUSIC.

SHADOW (V.O)

I may run to face you and hug you,

but there is a long time between us.

          I may go back…

‘I’ (V.O)

          Don't leave!

Can you just look at me for a while...?

From some place and time, my time has been

          Stopped.

The time fed me, at the same time, it unshaped my

          figure.

I feel like I became invisible.

SHADOW (V.O)

You’re only the protagonist in your own time and

          Space.

You are just a stranger among the strangers here.

16. EXT. SINKING CAMERA IN THE WATER, SEOUL - DAY LATE

    AFTERNOON / WINTER

The blur image of camera sinking in the water is shown.

On the bottom of the water, the shabby images of the

people in the city (this part will be more detailed

later) are projected with a projector ROLLING SOUND.

SHADOW (V.O)

          Strangers living as one…

Isn't it like a movie audience left alone in an

          empty theater?

It is exciting, yet stirs loneliness at the same

          Time.

Look at these tiny pieces of life and culture.

The complexity of the world, with a vast variety

          of people.

Their loneliness is buried somewhere in the

          gorgeous view of the city…

It’s the untouchable emptiness on their way home.

The camera reaches to the sand on the bottom of the

water. After little pause, the rolling camera is

    stopped with a CLINKING SOUND.

17. EXT. EXT. SUNG-SU BRIDGE, SEOUL – NIGHT / WINTER

THE NOISE OF PASSING CARS AND WIND comes again.

The night filled with orange-ish streetlights makes a

lonesome atmosphere. Cars pass on the freeway under the

bridge with TRAFFIC NOISE. The city’s canopy of

buildings is shown beyond a gray bar on the bridge. At

the end of the bridge, the people passing through the

entrance are shown. Some walk and some bike.

The ‘I’ holding a shabby camera walks to the entrance of

   the city.

The subway train passes over the bridge.

‘I’ (V.O)

Strange life in the strange world.

Familiar to you, but I still feel unfamiliar

          somehow.

          I sometimes became another’s companion, I became

one of them. I thought and felt with them.

They told me about a longing.

Longing for family, longing for friends, longing

for the love they couldn't make...

          Longing for forgotten memories...

(PAUSE)

It makes me tired at times.

          I wanna go back...

wanna go back to the home I've left.

18. EXT. SUBWAY PLATFORM, SEOUL – LATE NIGHT / WINTER

THE SOUND OF SUBWAY TRAIN comes. The orange-ish

headlight of the train gets glow and it overlaps to

the lamp light on the table in the opening.

‘I’ (V.O)

I can’t remember the taste of home anymore…

Maybe. It wasn't home I missed.

SHADOW (V.O)

Someone said, time is always time and place is

          always and only…place,..

What is actual is actual only for one time and

          only for one place.

19. INT. LIVING ROOM, HOME, SF - LATE NIGHT

The dim light waves in a stop motion movement. As the

narration comes, the light gets dimmer and fades out

with THE WHISTLE OF A TRAIN.

SHADOW (V.O)

We may not have a home from the beginning.

People just try to find the meaning of home from

          the fetters of their memory.

It’s like a train circling with no destination.

But, don’t try to stop it,

Time lasts forever like your (or the)

          unforgettable memory.

‘I’ (V.O)

          I don’t understand yet.

          I'm still afraid...

SHADOW (V.O)

You don’t have to understand it…

In the end, we are all strangers among strangers.
